The Oriental Research Institute (ORI) at Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati has a rich history and continues to be a hub for scholarly exploration. Let me share some insights about this esteemed institute:

  1. Foundation and Purpose:

    • The institute was established in July 1939 by the management of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
    • Its primary objective was to serve as a first-rate Research and Training Centre with specialized divisions for the study of:
      • Sanskrit and other languages.
      • Hindu religion and philosophy.
      • Hindu culture in general.
  2. Evolution and Expansion:

    • Originally known as the Sri Venkateswara Oriental Institute, it was later transferred to Sri Venkateswara University in November 1956.
    • The institute operates under two wings:
      • Research Wing: Engaged in scholarly investigations and academic pursuits.
      • Library Wing: Houses an impressive collection of resources.
  3. Library Holdings:

    • The library boasts a remarkable collection, including:
      • 16,948 manuscripts.
      • 50,000 printed books.
    • Each book is carefully selected to support research activities across various fields of Indology.

    • Under the management of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, the institute has made significant contributions:
      • Published sixteen volumes of the Oriental Journal.
      • Produced around sixty-four books in languages such as SanskritEnglishTelugu, and Tamil.
      • These publications cover diverse areas, including KosaDharmasastraVyakaranaVedanta, and more.

    • The institute flourished under the guidance of luminaries like:
      • Manavalli Ramakrishna Kavi (M R Kavi).
      • Veturi Prabhakara Sastry.
