How can we help you?

Collection

The process of collection involves acquiring manuscripts through various means. The ORI may engage in activities such as procuring manuscripts from public, government and collaborating with other institutions to expand its collection. This can be a meticulous process that requires expertise to identify and authenticate manuscripts, ensuring that the acquired materials are of historical and cultural significance.

Conservation

Conservation efforts at the Oriental Research Institute aim to safeguard the physical integrity of manuscripts. Manuscripts are susceptible to deterioration due to factors such as age, climate, pests, and improper handling. Conservationists at the institute employ specialized techniques to repair damaged manuscripts, stabilize fragile materials, and prevent further deterioration. This may involve processes like cleaning, deacidification, and binding to ensure the longevity of the manuscripts.

Preservation

Preservation involves creating optimal conditions for the long-term storage and maintenance of manuscripts. The ORI employs archival practices to protect manuscripts from environmental factors such as humidity, temperature fluctuations, and light exposure. Specialized storage facilities equipped with climate control systems and security measures are crucial for preserving the integrity of the manuscripts over time. Additionally, digitization efforts are also undertaken to create electronic backups, allowing wider access while reducing physical handling of the original manuscripts.

Cataloging and Documentation

Proper cataloging and documentation are essential components of the preservation process. The ORI likely maintains detailed records of each manuscript in its collection, including information on provenance, content, and physical condition. This documentation not only aids in the organization and accessibility of the collection but also serves as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars.

Research and Publication

The ORI may actively engage in scholarly research related to the manuscripts in its collection. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the cultural and historical context of the materials. Furthermore, the institute may publish catalogs, research papers, and other publications to share insights gained from the manuscripts with the academic community and the public.
